A crown − or cap − is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface, restoring the tooth to its original shape and size. A crown protects and strengthens a tooth’s structure when it can’t be restored with fillings or other types of restorations. Depending on your situation, we may place a crown to repair a broken or fractured tooth, to enhance the look of a tooth, or to replace large or fractured fillings.
Now, thanks to the latest technology, you can receive a crown in one visit! Why is this great news? Because the traditional approach involves taking an impression of your tooth, sending the impression to a service provider to mill the crown, and having you return for a second visit to fit the crown. If the crown didn’t fit properly, the process was repeated.
The CEREC® one-visit crown procedure eliminates the need for an impression before making the crown. With this technological approach, Dr. Rankin or Dr. Mingle will create your crown using an advanced software program. The crown is milled in the office and immediately placed in your mouth. The entire process takes between 1 ½ to 2 hours. The result is an excellent quality, porcelain crown for the same cost as a traditional crown – all in one appointment.
